A Global Celebration of WordPress Contributor Day – Contribution, Learning, and Community
WordPress has always been more than just a CMS. It is a global open-source project powered by millions of users, developers, designers, translators, writers, testers, and community members who contribute their time and skills to make the web better.
As part of WordCamp US 2026 Contributor Day, we hosted an online contributor session that brought together WordPress enthusiasts from different parts of the world to learn, share knowledge, and discover new ways to contribute to WordPress.
The response was amazing – 35+ WordPress contributors joined from around the globe, creating a collaborative environment where beginners and experienced contributors could connect, ask questions, and explore different contribution opportunities.
Bringing WordPress Contribution Beyond Physical Events
Contributor Day is one of the most valuable parts of any WordCamp. It gives attendees the opportunity to work directly with WordPress teams, learn contribution workflows, and become active members of the global WordPress community.
This year, we explored how online contribution sessions can help include more people who may not be able to attend WordCamp events physically.
By hosting this online session alongside the WCUS 2026 Contributor Day experience, we opened the door for more people to participate, learn, and start their WordPress contribution journey.
Key Topics We Discussed During the Session
🔌 WordPress Plugin Development: Building Better Plugins
One of the major discussions focused on WordPress plugin development.
We shared experiences, best practices, and ideas around:
- Creating high-quality WordPress plugins
- Following WordPress coding standards
- Improving plugin development workflows
- Understanding the WordPress plugin ecosystem
- Sharing knowledge with new developers
For many developers, contributing through plugins is one of the best ways to give back to the WordPress community while improving their own skills.
🤖 Using AI to Improve WordPress Development Workflows
Artificial Intelligence is changing how developers work, and WordPress development is no exception.
During the discussion, we explored how AI tools can help WordPress professionals:
- Speed up development workflows
- Improve debugging and problem-solving
- Generate ideas and documentation
- Learn new WordPress concepts faster
- Improve productivity while maintaining quality
AI is not replacing contribution – it is helping contributors work smarter and focus more on solving meaningful problems.

A strong WordPress community starts locally.
We discussed ideas around:

- Creating welcoming spaces for beginners
- Supporting local WordPress events
- Helping people find their place in the ecosystem
Local communities play an important role in bringing new voices and fresh ideas into WordPress.

The WordPress Polyglots team helps make WordPress available in hundreds of languages worldwide.
We discussed:
- How new contributors can join the Polyglots team
- How translation improves WordPress accessibility
- How beginners can start contributing without technical experience
You don’t need to be a developer to contribute to WordPress.
